Western Jutland reed for best thatched roof
Today, local rules of Vedersø Klit and Vester Husby say that holliday cottages must be brick-built with thatched roof with hipped gables which means that the gables of the roof have a cross cut towards the ridge and, thus it slants from all sides. Added to this, in Vester Husby a plot must be of at least 5000 m2, thus the holiday cottage will be undisturbed.

Forest of reeds
Common reed (Phragmites australis) grows many places in Denmark but the plant is especially typical of the vast wetlands of Western Jutland where it grows from the waterline till a half metre's depth.

Home of special animals
The forests of reeds are the home of a number of very special animal species that hide between the tall reeds. Here they find protection against tough weather and, not least, predators.

The bittern
When the day is waning you can in some areas hear a strange sound almost like the deep growling of a lion. The sound originates from the very unique bird, bittern (Botaurus stellaris). The bittern lives in the tall forests of deed where it preys on fish, amphibians, and insects.

Bird watch
Several other animals are living partly or permanently between the tall reeds e.g. roe deer. But first of all it is the birds that attract field naturalists with large binoculars or expensive cameras. One of the main attractions is the white-tailed eagle which can be observed if you are lucky. The large bird preys on birds living in the reeds.
